FAQs Section

1. What’s the difference between a guard dog and a protection dog?

While “guard dog” and “protection dog” sound synonymous, they don’t mean the same thing.

Guard dogs are generally property dogs that a raised without obedience training and deter threats through aggression, physical defense, and barking. They do this through their own volition, meaning they don’t wait for their owner’s command to act. Due to their lack of training, they can be unpredictable in social settings

Protection dogs, on the other hand, are raised to be obedient, socialized, and trained to protect only on command. Phantom K9 protection dogs are practically pets that live with your family, travel with you, and behave in the world with control.

2. Will a protection dog be safe around my kids/family/friends?

Yes, when properly trained. Phantom K9 protection dogs are protectors on command, but companions by default.

Our dogs are social, friendly, and safe around family, children, and other pets. They do not act out of aggression; they wait for your direction. Protection dogs can be counted on to be composed and safe.

3. How are protection dogs trained at Phantom K9?

Our protection dogs are trained using a three-level system:

  • Level 1: Family pets that have started their protection work after established obedience training. They are visual deterrents.

  • Level 2: Best for business owners, public figures, or anyone who would want command-driven action and confident control.

  • Level 3: These dogs are often born and raised to be protection dogs and trained to be mobile security assets that can be trusted in any environment.

Over the course of months (or sometimes years), Phantom K9 Protection Training includes real-world scenarios, advanced obedience, and diverse socialization.

4. What breeds make the best protection dogs?

We focus on proven working breeds known for intelligence, loyalty, and drive. Our most commonly trained Level 3 protection dogs include:

  • Belgian Malinois

  • German Shepherds

  • Dutch Shepherds

  • Occasionally: Dobermans or Cane Corsos (depending on temperament)

We see a wide variety of breeds that train to become Level 1 and Level 2 protection dogs. With the right health, temperament, and obedience foundations, dogs can be suited for protection work.

5. Do I need experience handling working dogs?

Not at all. Our team at Phantom K9 trains both the dog and the owner.

Over the course of multiple weeks, we work with you on how to issue commands, maintain structured daily obedience, and, of course, how to safely handle a protection scenario.

We offer free and lifelong support for all Phantom K9 clients, including follow-up sessions, to make sure you continue to succeed with your protection dog.

6. How much does a protection dog cost?

While we don’t list prices online due to the customization of each dog, it’s important to understand that a protection dog is not a pet-store purchase. It’s a long-term investment in your family’s security.

Purchasing a protection dog includes:

  • A professionally trained protection dog and gear

  • Unlimited one-on-one handler training sessions

  • Customized transition support and a customized care plan

  • Health certificate and pedigree documentation

  • Ongoing lifetime guidance and resources

7. Can I meet the dog before I buy?

Absolutely. We believe strongly in transparency and fit, and will guide you through a matchmaking process so you find your perfect fit.

Once we understand your needs through a free consultation, we’ll match you with a dog that suits your environment, personality, and goals.

Then, you’ll spend weeks meeting, training, and having sleepovers with the dog before committing.

8. Can I train my own dog in protection?

In some cases, yes! If your current dog has the right drive and obedience foundation, we can accept them into our protection training program.

Not all dogs are suitable for protection work. We start with an evaluation to determine if your dog is a good candidate. If not, there are alternatives.
