Board and Train vs. Private Sessions

If you’re reading this, you’re probably accepting that it’s time to do something about your dog’s behavior. Maybe your 60lb dog is uncontrollable on a leash and dragging you down the street, or your rescue pup is showing scary signs of resource guarding and reactivity. Maybe you’ve tried big name pet store training sessions or Tik Tok training hacks that didn’t work. Once you’ve made the decision to pursue training, the next question is: board and train or one-on-one sessions?

Phantom K9 is not selling you a quick fix. As an owner, we’re making sure that you know what you’re doing. We’re making sure that your dog is obedient so you can have an easier and safer life. And, depending on your situation, we’re here to recommend board and train or in-home sessions.

Option 1: Board and Train

The Board and Train is, by far, our most popular program. Your dog comes to stay with us in our Mesa facility, usually for about 4 weeks, and we do the heavy lifting. Think of a Board and Train like an immersive language course. If you want to learn Spanish, you can take a class once a week, or you can move to Mexico for a month. Which one works faster?

In a Board and Train, we control every single variable. We can maintain a consistent schedule, multiple training sessions throughout the day, and interactions with other dogs in new environments. This method is a lot more productive in a shorter period of time. They’ll learn rock-solid foundational commands (sit, place, heel, down, and recall) in distracted environments. You’ll learn how to properly execute these commands during private check-in training sessions throughout the program.

We also make a conscious effort to stress your dog out…

Why Your Dog Needs The "Stress" Factor

Hot take: Your dog needs some stress to learn how to handle it. A new wave of dog training is focused on “force-free,” which sounds nice in theory but only works when you have a piece of chicken in your hand. So what happens when you run out of chicken, or your dog reacts to another dog and treats don’t snap them out of it?

Reality is, life is stressful. You can control a quick “sit” command in exchange for a treat in your kitchen. You can’t control the neighbors lighting off fireworks on the Fourth of July or a wild bunny running through your yard. If your dog hasn’t experienced a “correction” when they weren’t listening, they’re going to crumble when real-life distractions hit.

During board and train, we introduce controlled stressors. That might start with staying calm while water is coming from the hose or not instigating a fight while interacting with another dog. Then, it could increase to staying in place while a maintenance worker comes in and out of the house or holding a heel along a busy road. We still have board and train dogs at our facility over holidays, so we’ll use those opportunities to train as well. Dogs learn how to stay calm and listen during fireworks and guests ringing the doorbell.

Your dog should know how to move through the stress and find their off-switch, rather than reacting to it.

Our board and train program is best for:

  • Mild to severe behavior issues (aggression, reactivity)

  • Owners with zero time to commit to daily foundational work

  • People who want the "heavy lifting" done by professionals

Option 2: Individual Training Sessions

Private lessons are a different type of commitment. Instead of us training your dog, we’re more so training you. These training sessions are best for the owner that feels confident being in the driver’s seat, like if you’ve been through obedience training with a previous dog or have minor behavioral problems. We meet individually either in your home or our facility, usually once or twice a week for 5-8 weeks total.

Here’s the catch with individual sessions: it’s on you to carry through with training. If you don’t do the homework, you are wasting your money. If we come to you one day a week to work but you baby your dog the other six days, you won’t see results. Your dog has likely gotten away with bad habits in your home thus far, and it takes work to break those. Private sessions take a high level of discipline from you as the owner. It means leading your dog through a new routine and rules.

During board and train sessions, your dog learns the rules in our controlled environment. From the moment they step into our facility, we are working with them on their disobedient habits. Then, they need to keep up their newly learned obedience back home, where they previously got away with misbehaving. The benefit of private sessions, however, is that we can work with your dog in the environments where they struggle. If you live in a busy neighborhood and your dog often barks at the neighbors, we can address that. If you always walk by that one nasty dog that sets yours off, we can work on that. If you have one spot on the couch you want your dog to settle on, we’ll build that habit.

Private sessions are best for:

  • Owners who enjoy the process of training

  • Minor behavioral "tune-ups"

  • People on a tighter budget who have the time to put in the work daily

Results Matter More Than Feelings

Arizona is a tough environment for a dog. Between 120º summers that keeps everyone cooped up inside, crowded farmers markets, and poisonous desert creatures, you need a reliable dog. We’re not going to “baby” you and your dog, because that’s not going to be effective when it matters. We care about making sure that you know what you’re doing.

We used balanced training, which means we reward the good stuff with treats and discourage the bad stuff with corrections. If you aren't willing to tell your dog "No," you are essentially just a treat vending machine. Our goal is to shift the relationship from transactional (I give you food, you sit) to relational (I am the leader, you follow).

Which One Should You Choose?

So, you’re sitting at home, listening to your dog growl at the person walking by your window. Which path do you take?

Choose Board and Train if:

You are overwhelmed. If your dog’s behavior is making your life smaller, like if you’ve stopped having people over or you only walk your dog at 4:00 in the morning to avoid others. This probably means you need a total reset. We will build the foundation so you can take over a finished product. It’s an investment in your sanity and your dog’s safety.

Choose Private Sessions if:

You have a relatively "good" dog with some annoying habits like counter surfing, and you realistically have 30–60 minutes a day to dedicate to training sessions. If you want to understand the obedience details, and you’re willing to be corrected by a trainer as much as your dog is, this is for you.
